This is a small corner of the internet that I’m writing into to talk about two of my favorite things—cities and style—and how they intersect. The title is a play on the name of a book by Jan Gehl (called Public Spaces, Public Life), which is all about observing how people navigate and experience cities and their surroundings. I like the idea that paying close attention to people—their movement patterns, their expressions, their willingness to stop and linger somewhere—tells us something essential about a place and what it holds for us. Style is part of this conversation, too. I am endlessly fascinated by how people dress. It’s intensely personal, but once you step outside, it becomes a matter of public life, too. I’m curious to talk with more of you about how and why you dress for the different places you encounter, and what you’re drawn to in the people you see on your daily walks. We all have a story to tell, and clothes are an opening sentence

one of my favorite public spaces: the bike lane
